Newton Falls - For the third time in recent history the Newton Falls Covered Bridge is open to traffic after extensive repairs to the roof joists that were damaged when a box truck too tall for the bridge crossed the historic structure last year. Trumbull County Engineer David DeChristofaro jokingly referred to earlier calamities that have befallen the bridge during his rededication speech as residents and local officials looked on. The crowd of about 50 braved the cold and wet weather to see their beloved bridge opened again. TC Engineer David DeChristofaro led the ribbon cutting ceremony with some assistance from Mayor Pat Layshock, Councilmen Rich Monteville and Rick Zamecnik, Councilwoman Mary Ann Johnson and Trumbull County Commissioner Frank Fuda to name a few.
DeChristofaro said that he couldn’t close the historic bridge to all traffic because of the federal funding that was used to restore the bridge but he hoped that the new bridge weight limit of 3 tons will eliminate all but car, light truck and van traffic, preserving the bridge for years to come.
